Darnell Taylor and Kevin Williams - Relationship

Darnell Taylor and Kevin Williams were lifelong friends whose relationship became romantic on New Year’s Eve 2025/2026. Their partnership grew from the West Baltimore friend group later known as The Survivors and was shaped by their shared experience of police violence in 2019, Kevin’s resulting PTSD, and Darnell’s later decision to become a police officer.

Childhood Friendship

Darnell and Kevin grew up together in West Baltimore alongside Marcus, Tre, and Jamal. Their friend group formed during childhood and remained closely connected through school, recreation-center advocacy, family crises, and adulthood.

In summer 2014, both boys repeatedly asked volunteers at the West Baltimore Recreation Center to include Marcus in activities. They were present when a volunteer assaulted him and stayed with him afterward.

June 2019 Police Violence

During the June 2019 police-violence incident, Officer Rodriguez pointed his service weapon at the unarmed sixteen-year-old Kevin. Darnell and Tre pulled Kevin backward out of the line of fire. Kevin developed severe PTSD from the encounter, while the contrast between Rodriguez’s escalation and Nathan Weston’s de-escalation shaped Darnell’s decision to enter law enforcement.

The event remained part of their adult relationship. Kevin’s trauma was linked to police presence and firearms, while Darnell’s work required him to wear a BPD uniform and carry a service weapon. Darnell understood Kevin’s triggers and supported him through panic attacks and difficult encounters with police-related reminders.

Romantic Relationship

Darnell and Kevin’s friendship became romantic on New Year’s Eve 2025/2026. Their shared history allowed them to recognize each other’s crisis responses and communicate directly about the tension between Kevin’s trauma and Darnell’s profession.

When Darnell graduated at the top of his Baltimore Police Academy class in early 2026, Kevin posted:

“From the boy who pulled me to safety in 2019 to Officer Taylor graduating top of his class. From surviving that day to becoming the kind of cop our community needs. You did it, baby. You’re one of the good ones.”

Kevin’s use of “baby” made their romantic relationship public.

February 2026 Public Recognition

During the February 2026 domestic-violence response, Darnell de-escalated an active assault, took Isaac into custody, and helped arrange a psychiatric evaluation. After Shanice Mitchell’s account of the response spread through West Baltimore, Kevin wrote, “That’s my partner. I’m so incredibly proud of him.”

Darnell was uncomfortable with the sudden public attention. Kevin stayed with him while he read the community’s responses and helped him accept the pride expressed by his mother, his friends, and people who had followed his path from the 2019 crisis into policing.
